Apparently people dump sugar into poi to make it bearable. I still give this place 4 stars because the poi, lomi and haupia were very good, and the loco moco and pancakes here are so ono. So I ordered the pipikaula so she could have something else to eat and leave a good taste in her mouth which it did. PIPIKAULA. But the poi and the Lau Lau still has that local style flavor that is different from others which I enjoy. My uncle’s family owns Highway Inn and I’ve been to the Waipahu location a few times but this new location will definitely be more convenient since we usually stay at the Ala Moana Hotel when visiting Oahu. I didn't like a lot of the sides of the combo plates, so we decided to order a la carte.We ordered the Squid Lu'au, Pork Lau Lau, Lomi Salmon, Fried Rice w/ an over easy egg, and Pipikaula. We had to wait a little, but this place is pretty huge so the wait is never too long. The first thing she was craving was good old Hawaiian food, and we were in the neighborhood, so we decided to stop by Highway Inn. My kids loved there foods my dad and my husband said the food was okay. Was my fave dish this evening. Despite it's a long process to make, it's worth the wait to bite into these spicy treats. I also had the mix plate which had the fish, bbq chicken and beef galbi. This was an unusually dark, very rainy day in Hawaii and it was nice to be welcomed into the brightly lit, warm interior of this restaurant. We got there on a Friday night and it was really busy, we waiting for about 1 hr maybe a little less. I said really and tasted it and omg. I also ordered their pipikaula and it had no flavor.... it basically tasted like a cheap steak that was overcooked. Grab a fork and dig into one of these delicious British desserts! We flew in at night for an overnight trip and stopped at Highway Inn on the way to our hotel. Highway Inn is our go-to for a Hawaiian food fix. It's much more spacious but has this hole-in-the-wall feel with its interior. But then somebody pointed out that Helena's and People's Cafe pipikaula is semi-wet so do we exclude them for being half wet/half dry? There's also a bar available and I can imagine a place like this to watch events so it would be popular for group outings. Exactly how I imagined it to be EXCEPT for the pipikaula because I still think Waipahu has better pipikaula than Kaka'ako.
